Robert W. Sandberg

December 11, 1940 — October 31, 2022

Robert Wayne Sandberg, 81, of Denmark WI passed away into the hands of God on October 31, 2022 surrounded by his loving family in his home.


Bob was born Dec 11, 1940 in Fond du Lac, to John and Jane (Bahr) Sandberg. He attended Goodrich High School and graduated in 1959. He graduated in 1963 from the University of Oshkosh and attended the University of Kansas and Indiana University where he graduated in 1970 with a Master’s Degree in Chemistry.


On July 27, 1963, Bob married his High School Sweetheart, Joyce (Sabel) Sandberg, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, in Fond du Lac and then moved to Denmark for a teaching position at Denmark High School. He taught chemistry, (his favorite), organic chemistry, math and science at Denmark High School for 37 years before retiring in 2000.Contrubitions of Bob’s life include being president of the Denmark Education Association and negotiated for the teachers union, serving as Denmark Municipal Judge for 20 years, and in 1978, Bob donated a kidney to his younger brother Dick, who survived for another 13 years.


His greatest joy was being together with his very close family. Bob enjoyed playing golf with Joyce and their 3 amazing daughters. He played golf at Twin Oaks and later was a member at Wander Springs, where he golfed in two leagues. Bob would tell people that his wife would beat him in golf quite often. We traveled throughout the US, including Hawaii, Alaska, Canada and Mexico. After Bob’s retirement, 1-2 months were spent in FL or out West playing golf and visiting relatives. Bob’s other hobbies included playing sheepshead, cribbage, fishing and woodworking, making numerous pieces of furniture for our home and our family as well as for the church picnic, where he was a member at Prince of Peace Catholic Church.


Bob will be sadly missed, by the love of his life, Joyce; his daughters, Dawn (Wayne) Schmidt De Pere, Tammy Slick, Appleton and Wendy Sandberg (Frank Scortino) Pewaukee. Our grandchildren, Leah (Paul) Steckart, Shannen Schmidt (special friend Jordan), Logan Anderson (Ava), Sydney Anderson, also Anthony and Aydan Scortino; two Great grandchildren, Jaxon and Parker Marie Steckart.


He is also survived by his Step Grandchildren, Jennifer Slick, Carrie Slick, Tracie (Roger) Racknor, Shelly Slick (Harry Rusch) and Christopher (Julie) Slick. step great grandchildren and step great great Grandchildren . Brother John (Sandy), Sister-in- law, Terry, Fond du Lac. Nieces and nephews. In-laws, Mary (Jim) Scofield, Kathy (Mike) Martin, Ron (Carole) Sabel, Bob Sabel and Jerry Sabel.


Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his in-Laws Marie and Gregor Sabel. His Brother Dick, Son-in-Law Bob Slick, Nephews, Jim and Jay Sandberg and Niece, Nicky Sabel.


Family and friends may visit at Cotter Funeral Home-Denmark (536 County Road R) on Sunday, November 6, from 3-6pm. A parish prayer service will be held at 6:00pm. Visitation will continue on Monday, November 7, at Prince of Peace Catholic Church (3425 Willow Road, Green Bay) from 9:30am until 10:45am. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am with Fr. Dennis Ryan officiating and Deacon Jeff Prickette assisting. Entombment will be in Allouez Chapel Mausoleum.


Special thanks to Kayla and our granddaughter Leah, Bob’s loving hospice nurses; to Deb, Deacons Jeff, Dennis and Bill and Fr. Ryan from Prince of Peace Catholic Church; and to our special neighbor Kim as well as staff at Bellin Hospital and Home Health and Woodside Rehab.

Bob always wanted to give a scholarship to a deserving student at Denmark High School going into science/chemistry. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be put towards his wishes.
