Marilynn E. McNerney, age 87 of Allouez, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, September 15, 2023 at home with family. She was born on January 24, 1936 in Gary, Indiana to Frederick and Helen (Misanko) Hile.
Marilynn was a 1954 graduate of Emerson High School in Gary, Indiana. She was involved in the school yearbook, theater, and lettered in sports. She met her husband James in Long Beach, California while he was on naval duty on the USS Brush, DD745, destroyer. Marilynn and James were married on May 4, 1963 at St. Luke’s Church in Gary, Indiana. They were devoted members at Resurrection Catholic Church.
Marilynn worked various jobs as a dental hygienist and at the Singer Sewing Company, while mainly devoting her life to her family as a homemaker. She enjoyed cheering for the Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Brewers, sewing, gardening, cooking, baking, reading, and observing nature. She dearly loved and supported her children and their achievements. Marilynn’s most treasured moments were spending time with her grandkids and family. She also held a special place in her heart for her great-grandson Jack.
Marilynn is survived by her husband of 60 years, James; their children: Patrick (Susan) McNerney, Oconto Falls, Kerri (Brett) Grimshaw, Burlington, IA, Michael (Lori) McNerney, De Pere, and Christopher (Gina) McNerney, Washburn; grandchildren: Chelsea (Ryan) Roessler, Brittnee Grimshaw, Garrett Grimshaw, Erin McNerney, Ryan McNerney, William McNerney, Connor McNerney, and Graceyn McNerney; and great-grandchild: Jack Roessler. She is further survived by many nieces and nephews, other relatives, friends, and neighbors.
Marilynn was preceded in death by her parents Frederick and Helen Hile; sister and brother-in-law: Dolores (Robert) Gregor; brother and sister-in-law: John (Carol) Hile; niece: Janelle Hile; parents-in-law: Col. Joseph and Gladys McNerney; and brother-in-law: Col. David (Frances) McNerney.
Family and friends may gather from 9:00 – 10:45 am on Monday, September 25, 2023 at Resurrection Catholic Church, 333 Hilltop Dr., Green Bay. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am with Fr. Tim Shillcox, O. Praem, officiating. Marilynn will be laid to rest at Allouez Catholic Cemetery.
The family extends a thank you to the many caregivers, nurses, and doctors who cared for Marilynn over the last year. Thank you to Unity Hospice for their kindness and care. A special thank you to Fr. Tim Shillcox for his comfort and guidance through her journey of Christian life.
Memorials in Marilynn’s honor may be made to St. John’s Homeless Shelter.
