Marie A. Van Den Elzen, age 97, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, July 11, 2024. She was born on March 11, 1927, in Hobart to the late William and Bertha (Van Laanen) Kocken. On June 15, 1949, she married Clarence Van Den Elzen who preceded her in death on June 13, 2017. Marie was very active in various community programs. With Clarence, they delivered for Meals on Wheels, she also loved to quilt and was a member of the St. Mary Quilting Club. She made many quilts for her kids and grandkids. Marie also liked to play cards, and especially loved Sheepshead with the ladies at the community center. She was a proficient gardener, her flower beds as well as her raspberries and strawberries were quite impressive. Marie was a great bowler; she received many trophies and patches over the years. She enjoyed traveling with Clarence, they spent quite a bit of time at the family cabin on Munger Lake with her family, who were her pride and joy.
Survivors include her children; Dan (Kathy) Van Den Elzen, Susan (Richard) Smits, Janice Loehlein, Jean Angell, John (Laura) Van Den Elzen and Betty (Roche) Smits, grandchildren; Mark (Special friend Sarah Taylor) Van Den Elzen, Ann Van Den Elzen, Sarah (Joe) McKee, Joash (Shannon) Smits, Erica (Steve) Rouser, Paul (Katie) Loehlein, Amy Loehlein, Jessica Thrun, Donnie (Mary) Angell, Chris (Laura) Van Den Elzen, Craig (Beth) Van Den Elzen, Trisha (Kyle) Meulemans, Tanya (Kevin) Kussow and Tara (Steven) Lamers. Marie is further survived by many great grandchildren and one great great grandchild, sisters in law; Eunice Kocken, Carol Van Den Elzen, Ruby Dohrmann, Jane Kaster, Theresa Van Den Elzen as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Preceding her in death are her parents, her husband, Clarence, siblings; Neal (Harriet) Kocken, Henrietta (Lester) Roffers, Albert (Marlene) Kocken, Helen (John) Van Noie, Walter Kocken, Norb (Carolne) Kocken and John (Ann) Kocken, brothers and sisters in law; Ervin (Cleo) Van Den Elzen, Orville Van Den Elzen, Jerry Kaster, Don Van Den Elzen and Gerald Dohrmann.
Family and friends may gather on Thursday, July 18, 2024, at St. Mary Catholic Parish, 4805 Sportsman Dr, Ledgeview beginning at 9:00am until 10:45am, the Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00am. Entombment will take place at Allouez Catholic Cemetery and Mausoleum.
The family would like to thank the caregivers at Angels Touch as well as from Unity Hospice, you were amazing with Marie. They would also like to thank Dr. LaFond for all her help with the last few months.
