Marie Evelyn Schweiner, age 92, of Denmark, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 16, 2025 surrounded by her family.
Marie was raised on a dairy farm and graduated with the Luxemburg High School Class of 1950. She went on to attend Door-Kewaunee County Normal School, where she studied elementary education. Her teaching career began in a one-room schoolhouse in Cherneyville, where she taught grades 1 through 8 for four years. Dedicated to furthering her education, Marie earned her bachelor’s degree from St. Norbert College in De Pere in 1958.
On June 28, 1958, she married Mathew J. Schweiner at St. Martin Catholic Church in Tonet. In 1964, they moved into their forever home in Denmark, where Marie found great joy in homemaking and raising their family. Her strong Catholic faith was the foundation of her life and marriage. A lifelong educator, she brought her gift for teaching to everything she did. Her unwavering commitment to faith and education was central to her life. She taught her children (and daughter and son-in-law’s) many valuable lessons, from cooking, making jam, playing a game of sheepshead to understanding the importance of faith. One talent she kept all to herself, none of her children ever quite mastered the technique for her pie crusts. Through it all, she devoted herself to caring for and guiding her children.
In 1971, Marie and Matt purchased a farm in Cooperstown, a special place that became the heart of countless family gatherings and life lessons. Eventually, they built a cabin there. While Matt was a skilled carpenter, it was Marie who brought the vision and attention to detail. From the blueprints to the final touches, she was involved every step of the way. Together, they made a remarkable team, creating a space filled with love and memories that will be cherished for generations to come.
Marie was an active member of All Saints Parish, where she exemplified what it meant to live her faith. She served as a Eucharistic minister and participated in many parish ministries, including baking cinnamon rolls for Donut Sunday, making pies for Bingo, contributing to the Altar Society, and arranging flowers for the altar.
Marie later joined New York Life, initially working as a secretary in support of Mathew’s career. She eventually became a licensed agent and practiced for ten years, helping clients plan for their futures. Proud of her Belgian heritage, Marie combined her love of culture and education by founding the Belgian Heritage Scholarship at St. Norbert College. She supported this scholarship throughout her life, helping students pursue higher education while honoring the cultural legacy that meant so much to her.
Marie also had a special love for Mona, the family dog, whose companionship brought her comfort, laughter, and joy.
Marie is survived by her children:
She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Nancy DuBois; sister-in-law Marcella Dellemann; four great-grandchildren: Oaklyn, Lincoln, Vera, and Nolan; foster children: Steve, Troy, Mark, and Dana; and godchildren: James DuBois, Lloyd Loberger, and Dawn March; along with many nieces and nephews.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Mathew and her daughter, Sara Malay; Granddaughters, Emily Heim and Elisabeth Tracey, MD; her parents; sisters Linda DuBois and Carol (Dan) Ratajczak; brothers Henry Jr., Harold, Gerald, and Richard DuBois (and wife Ann); in-laws Gerald and Laverne Schweiner, Norbert Schweiner, Dana and LaVerne Sisel, Edgar Dellemann, and Dan Ratajczak.
Though she will be deeply missed, her spirit lives on in the lessons she taught, the traditions she nurtured, and the love she shared. We will honor her best when we remember her in our actions and interactions with others, through kindness, keeping the faith, and love for one another.
