Margaret Mary “Sam” (Schumacher) Haney Hurley

May 31, 1931 — Sep 20, 2026

Margaret Mary “Sam” (Schumacher) Haney Hurley, 95, of De Pere, passed away on Sunday, September 20, 2026, following a long life centered around family, friends, books, travel, a hidden box of Seroogy’s under her bed, and most importantly laughter.

Sam was born May 31, 1931, in Green Bay, the daughter of Clement “Clem” and Katherine “Kitty” (Schenk) Schumacher. She grew up in the Schumacher family home at 614 N. Maple Ave. in Green Bay with her four sisters, Jane, Carol, Sally and Sue. Her father owned and operated a grocery store and meat market on Mather Street steps from her house, where Sam, her sisters, and her mother worked alongside Clem in the family business. Her childhood was spent playing in her neighborhood with her best friend Betty Rouseau and attending St. Patrick’s Grade School, where the nuns taught her annoying sayings she would later use to irritate her children.

While she attended St. Joseph’s Academy graduating with the Class of 1949, her focus was not on academics but dating boys from Central Catholic High School. One of those boys was our father. Engaged at 18, the nuns told her it would never last. I guess she showed them.

On February 23, 1952, Margaret married John Edward Haney in Green Bay. Together they raised eight children in De Pere, although exactly where in De Pere changed frequently—they lived in nine different houses over the years. Each new home brought new neighbors, new friends, and new stories to the family lore. By the end, Sam could have a house totally unpacked, set up, with pictures on the walls within twenty-four hours. John preceded Sam in death on May 25, 1981, at the age of 51.

On November 22, 1984, Sam married Thomas P. “Tom” Hurley Sr. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in De Pere. Their marriage brought together the Haney and Hurley families and began another important chapter in Sam’s life enriched by Tom’s smart ass comments. They wisely appreciated their second chance at happiness and shared nearly 27 years of marriage and adventures before Tom’s death on September 22, 2011.

Sam is survived by her eight children: Lynne Paplham; Daniel “My Danny Boy” (Meg) Haney; Cindy Haney; Jennifer (Mark) Moran; Patti Haney (Charles Paine); Holly (Kurtis) Scheer; John (Amy) Haney; and Rebecca Haney.

She is further survived by her grandchildren: Lynne’s children, Carolyn Paplham, Mary Paplham, Will Paplham and Ben Paplham; Daniel’s children, Brendan (Lauren) Haney, Devan Haney, Connor (Lexie) Haney, Kiernan Haney, Sierra (Chaz) Heideman and Alayna Knier; Cindy’s children, Jamie Flynn (fiancé Steven Amstadt) and Adam (Amy) Flynn; Jennifer’s children, Chad (Ashley) Moran, Lauren (Chris) Saum, Max (Christine) Moran and Shane (Brooke) Moran; Patti’s son, Corey (Priya) Paine; Holly’s daughters, Katherine (Robert) Desotelle, Eleanore (Aaron) Kinard, Amelia Scheer and Elizabeth Scheer; and John’s children, John Christian (Morgan) Haney, Nicholas (Encar) Haney, Madeleine Haney (fiancé Tyler Pettenger) and Fallon Haney.

Sam was also blessed with seventeen great-grandchildren, who added yet another generation to the family she cherished.

Through her marriage to Tom, Sam embraced the Hurley family. She is survived by her stepchildren Sue Gevers and Daniel (Sue) Hurley. Sue’s children, Heather, Greg and Matt; Danny’s girls, Kristen, Jena, and Megan; and their families were also an important part of Sam’s extended family. Sam is also survived by the family of her late stepson, Thomas P. “Tuffy” Hurley Jr., including his wife, Eileen, and their children, Scott and Laura.

Sam is also survived by her sisters, Sally Lemerond and Sue Beerntsen, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clem and Kitty; her first husband, John Edward Haney; her second husband, Thomas P. “Tom” Hurley Sr.; her sisters and brothers-in-law, Jane and Bernard Kust and Carol and Robert Conrad; her brothers-in-law, Clayton Lemerond and Gerald Beerntsen; her stepson, Thomas P. “Tuffy” Hurley Jr.; and her stepson-in-law, Bill Gevers.

Over the course of 95 years, Sam saw the family that began with Clem and Kitty and their five daughters grow into generations of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She experienced the joys and challenges of raising a large family, the loss of two husbands and other loved ones, and the happiness of watching succeeding generations establish families of their own. Through it all, she rolled with the punches. Hers was truly a life well lived.

Sam’s family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Eden Vista, where Sam made her home in assisted living, especially Doug (Mr. Wonderful), Jen (Ms. Perfect), Allie, Amy, Marcus, Rachel, Janet, and Bob, and to her St. Croix Hospice caregivers, Traci, Nicole, Lyman and Eric, for the kindness, compassion and care they provided to Sam.
