Kurt Welsing died December 16 after a brief illness. Born November 4, 1929, to Arnold and Ethel Welsing (Jobelius) he was the second of seven children.
Words cannot convey the impact that Kurt had on his family, neighbors and anyone who was blessed to have met him. He had a magical ability to engage anyone, even strangers, in conversation. Kurt's genuine interest in other people's lives and good-natured teasing was all part of his unique style. Thinking of others was so ingrained, that he unselfishly worried about the comfort of others, even in his final days.
The first two decades of Kurt's life were spent on the family farm, just east of Poland in the town of Eaton. Kurt was hard-working as most of the farm work was done by hand or with horses. He looked back fondly on those days and his favorite horse "Sparky". Even after getting married, Kurt would return to the farm on weekends to help out.
A chance meeting during a community dance at the "Bluestone", changed Kurt's life. There he met his future wife, Helen Christensen. They married in 1949, built a home, a family and had a blessed shared life of over 71 years.
Kurt worked for Schuster Construction Co. There he became a skilled heavy equipment operator for over 35 years. During this time, he also worked part time at the Hidden Valley Ski Area, where his children learned to ski. When Schuster Construction Co. went out of business in the mid 80's, Kurt drove school bus for the Denmark School System for 12 years.
He was a long-time member of Christ Lutheran Church in Denmark. Kurt served terms as Treasurer and Church Council President. Helen and Kurt were members of the Fellowship Club and volunteered for countless church events. Kurt also enjoyed playing in the church Dart Ball League.
Kurt and Helen were dedicated to their family. While Kurt worked in the construction field, Helen made their house a home. Following Danish tradition, Helen was a great baker. Delicious kringle, pies and cookies were always on hand, Thankfully this ability is also found in his daughters and daughter-in-law as they baked for Kurt after Helen passed. This satisfied Kurt's sweet tooth and anyone else lucky enough to be in the kitchen. He said, "home-made cookies were like vitamin pills."
Summer camping around Wisconsin was a big part of Kurt and Helen's family life; a favorite being Peninsula State Park. After their kids left home, Kurt and Helen enjoyed playing cards and cross country skiing with friends. They also continued camping with family and friends, including winter trips to Florida. The people they met often invited Kurt and Helen to come visit because they enjoyed their company so much.
Kurt was well known and enjoyed living in the Denmark area. He loved it when people stopped in or came to visit. He'd talk about deer hunting, his days on the farm and the people he'd met through work and travel. People who knew him described him as a "kind man". He has been a wonderful role model for his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. His example has impacted his family through 4 generations. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by four children: Debra (Jim) Welter, Dave (Rose) Welsing, Lana (Kevin) Kane, Ross (Sue) Welsing; nine grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren, one brother Roger (Cookie) Welsing, as well as other relatives and friends.
Kurt was preceded in death by two great grandchildren: Lily Welsing and Charlie Thyes; three sisters and four brothers-in-law: Dorthy (Don) Bries, Grace (John) Geyer, Yvonne (Marvin) Bauer, Burnell (Maysel) Christensen; two brothers: Howard Welsing and Robert (Lynn) Welsing.
