Kay Laundrie (Haakenstad), aged 73, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, July 5th, 2026, after courageously and gracefully battling cancer.
She was born on January 29th, 1953, to the late Earl Julian Haakenstad and Eleanore Marie (Sachtschale) Haakenstad Hegge.
Kay grew up in Wausau, WI; graduating from Wausau High School and then attending and graduating from UW-Steven’s Point.
Kay worked for the Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles for her entire career, starting in Customer Service working behind the counter, later administering road tests, and finally being promoted to Auditor. She was able to retire early.
Kay loved and provided wonderful homes and lives to many cats during her lifetime. In addition to her pets, Kay enjoyed knitting, watching classic movies, and reading.
Kay married the love of her life, Larry Laundrie, in a private, Hawaiian ceremony on March 3rd, 2003. Larry and Kay were happily married for 22 years until his passing in January 2026. Over the course of their marriage, Larry and Kay had a shared love of boating, travelling, and spending time with family and friends.
Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Eleanore; husband, Larry Laundrie; stepfather, Paul Hegge Senior; stepmother, Dorothy Haakenstad; and stepbrother, Peter Hegge.
She is survived by her sister, Jill (Tim) Haakenstaad Carter; her stepbrother, Paul (Judy) Hegge Junior (and their children); her stepsister, Mary Hegge; her stepbrother, Myron Holley; her stepchildren, Bill Laundrie and Tracy Laundrie; and sister-in-law Linda (Fred) Miller.
A private committal ceremony will be held.
