John C. Wagner

March 6, 1945 — May 30, 2025

John C. Wagner passed away peacefully on May 30, 2025, after a courageous battle with lymphoma. He was born on March 6, 1945, to Robert and Elizabeth (Heintskill) Wagner in Burlington, WI.

John devoted his life to education, compassion, and the beauty of nature. His passion for sharing knowledge and helping others led him to establish Tanglewood, a nonprofit educational corporation that has enriched countless lives since its founding in 1972.

In his early years, John traveled across Europe, gaining a deep appreciation for different cultures. However, it was his connection to Guatemala that truly shaped his mission. After hosting his first college student from Guatemala, he fell in love with the country and its people. Thanks to his dedication, 37 students were given the opportunity to come to Wisconsin and Illinois for a full-immersion English learning experience, leaving a lasting impact on their futures.

A devoted gardener, John found immense joy in his flower gardens, especially in his beloved daylilies, including hybridized specimens found nowhere else in the world. His desire to share the beauty he cultivated led him to create a blog, where he documented his garden through writing and photography, inspiring others with his passion. He also cherished hiking and spending time outdoors, always drawn to the peace and inspiration found in nature.

John is survived by his loving spouse, Efrain Rivera; his brother, Joel Wagner; his sister, Marge (Mark) Johnston; his in-laws, Jean Wagner, Elaine Wagner, and Roberta Wagner; and many nieces and nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Bill, Bob, Dick, and Jim Wagner.

A Celebration of John’s Life will be held at his home at a later date.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to John’s many dear friends, as well as Bellin Memorial Hospital, Unity Hospice, and the compassionate staff at the Jack and Engrid Meng Residence for their exceptional care and kindness during his final days.
