Joanne Bauer passed away on August 19, 2021. She was born in Chilton, WI, on January 6, 1938 to Hugo and Josephine (Simon) Salm. Joanne graduated from Chilton High School in 1956. She was very active in high school and was often placed in leadership positions by the school. In 1955, she was a member of the Wisconsin High School Home Economics Association and was elected to serve as the President of the association by the student members numbering over 1000 Wisconsin High School Students at their annal summer convention held at Green Lake Baptist Assembly in 1955. As president of the group, she was asked to host Governor Warren Knowles as he toured the many high school age student exhibits at the 1955 State Fair.
Joanne graduated from Chilton High in 1956 and enrolled at UW Stout in 1956 and became very active in college life. She pledged Alpha Phi Sorority and joined full membership in her freshmen year, becoming a very active member throughout her collegiate years. As a senior she was nominated by her sorority as their candidate for the 1959 Homecoming celebration. She was elected to serve as the 1959 Stout Homecoming Queen by the student body.
Graduating in May of 1960, Joanne began her teaching career at Port Washington High School. Her next years of teaching took her to Eleva Strum High School where she taught English for three years. Moving in 1964, they accepted contracts with Marinette High School where she taught English, Journalism, and Home Ed. After five years in Marinette, Joanne and Bob accepted positions in Green Bay, Joanne at Washington Middle School, while Bob joined the faculty at UWGB.
On August 5, 1961, she married the love of her life, Robert Bauer, at St. Mary Church in Chilton and they had just celebrated 60 years of marriage. Joanne enjoyed operating the Village Peddler Antique with Robert for 40 years, but antiques were a life-long hobby. Her other hobbies included: gardening, reading, traveling, and relaxing at the white lake cottage with Robert. She was a member of Resurrection Parish, and the AV Chapter of P.E.O.
In addition to her parents, Hugo and Josephine, she is preceded in death by her sister Lorraine (Salm) Richter of Mequon, WI.
Joanne is survived by her loving husband Robert; Sister: Judy (Donald) Weber of Oshkosh, WI; Brother: Michael (Pat) Salm of Merced, CA. Pre-deceased are his Sisters-in-law: La Von Smith of Milwaukee WI, Annabel Bauer of Sun City Center FL, and Nancy Bauer of St. Paul; Brother-in-law: Walter Bauer of MN.
She is further survived by several nieces and nephews: Amy Jankowski of Appleton; Katie and Mike Marchant of Mahtomeda; Debby and Dan Mueller of Minnesota; Mary Kay and Michael Warner of Middellton; Kathy, Josh, and Michael Salm Merced Cal; Elizabeth and Scott Scheffer of Minnesota; Dan and Tracey Bauer of Arizona; Kathy Davie of Port Washington; Patti Smith of Germany; Ann and Steve Hessil of Milwaukee; Mary Louise and Joseph McMann of Dallas; Sarah Smith of Florida; Tim Smith (deceased) of Milwaukee; Barbara and Steve Zawadski of Shore View MN.
The family would like to thank Unity Hospice for their amazing care of Joanne, as well as the McCormick Home for their wonderful care and support, and to many thoughtful neighbors who gave a helping hand.
Family and Friends may visit at Resurrection Catholic Church, 333 Hilltop Drive, Allouez, on Friday, August 27, from 9:30-10:45am. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am with Fr. Bob Kabat officiating. Burial will be in Allouez Mausoleum. Cotter Funeral and Cremation Care is assisting the family. A livestream of the service will be available at www.gbres.org/live
