Joan D. Stencil, 90, Allouez, passed away peacefully at her home with her family by her side on Tuesday, March 23, 2021. The daughter of Lawrence and Josephine Gilling was born on May 22, 1930. Joan graduated from St. Joseph's Academy in 1948. She attended Rosary College in Chicago for a year then transferred to Michigan State in Lansing, MI where she earned a Bachelor of Applied Arts degree in 1952. Joan moved back to Green Bay and started her long career as a teacher. She taught in the Green Bay district and West De Pere district. The vast majority of her career was spent at Westwood Elementary School where she created lifelong friendships and memories. In 1993, she obtained her Master of Education degree from Viterbo College in LaCrosse, WI.
On August 6, 1954, she married Norman T. Stencil. Together they raised six children: Tom Stencil (Sally) Green Bay, Michele Hunt (Tony) Huntington Beach, Ca., Susan Kendl, Milwaukee, Kristine Stencil, Dyckesville, Michael Stencil, Green Bay, and Kevin Stencil (Stephanie) Tampa, FL.
Joan lived a life of devotion to her family. She was a selfless person who always put others first. Through all the ups and downs of life, she was a fighter that never gave up on those she loved. The simple things in life are what she enjoyed the most. Her collection of angels, love of birds and flower gardens brought her immense joy.
She is further survived by 13 grandchildren: Joshua (Brittany)Stencil, Matthew (Danielle)Stencil, Dylan and Stephanie Hunt, Andrew, Hannah and Olivia Kendl, Erin Johnson, Zoe Berkovitz, Austin Stencil, Madeline (Zach) Talbott, Emily and Sydney Stencil; two great-grandchildren, Cayden Kendl and Josephine Stencil; two sisters, Elaine Tracy and Dorothy Shaughnessy; sister-in-law Diane Rabideau; many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband Norman; and brothers Lawrence and Robert Gilling; brother’s-in-law, Tom Tracy and Fr. Rollen Stencil.
Family and friends may gather at Cotter Funeral Home, 860 N. Webster Ave. De Pere, WI on Saturday May 22, 2021 from 10:00AM to 10:45AM, a memorial service to follow at 11:00AM with Fr. Tom Reynebeau officiating. Interment in Allouez Catholic Cemetery.
