James (Jim) Raymond Sloan, Jr., age 85, of Green Bay, passed away on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. Jim was born on April 8, 1940, to the late James Raymond Sloan, Sr. and Margret (Issac) Sloan in Green Bay, WI. He attended West High School where Jim was a great football and basketball player, later attending St. Norbert’s College. Jim retired from the Green Bay Fire Department as Battalion Chief after 33 years of heroic service where he was awarded 2 commendations of Valor and 1 commendation of meritorious service. He saved both citizens and firefighters alike. While working as a fire fighter, he also worked for Wisconsin Michigan Trailways, Greyhound Bus and Mac trucking. Prior to joining the fire department, Jim worked at Green Bay and Western Railway.
Jim loved fishing on Lake Michigan, bird and deer hunting. He also loved photography, helping his wife, Judy, with perennial gardening, cooking and sitting on his patio enjoying the local wildlife and gardens. When his 3 children were small, Jim enjoyed creating Christmas wonderment by creating sleigh tracks, “reindeer” hoof tracks and “Santa” boot prints on the front lawn and rooftop to surprise the children on Christmas morning. He was also a wickedly good checker player with his daughter, Debra.
We remember Jim as a hardworking father and courageous fire fighter. Jim’s greatest accomplishments were saving lives, raising three happy children and loving his wife, Judy, for 60 years.
He is survived by daughters Debra (Roger) Gerard, Diane (Phil) Steffen and son, Steven Sloan, grandchildren Avery Gerard and Patrick Steffen. Jim is further survived by his brother Richard (Alta) Sloan, as well as many other relatives and friends.
In addition to family members, he will be missed by his longtime friends Jim Jeanquardt and Chuck Ramsay.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Judy, his parents Raymond Sloan, Sr. and Margret Sloan, sister Meredith Vanden Langenburg and grandchild Adam Glennon.
A graveside service for James will be held at 11:00am, Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at Allouez Catholic Cemetery 2121 Riverside Dr, Green Bay.
