Elizabeth "Liz" Mazna

May 7, 1939 — January 8, 2023

Loving wife, cherished mother, treasured grandmother, and loyal friend, the sweet, gentle soul of Elizabeth “Liz” Mazna was welcomed to Heaven when she passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 8, 2023. Born on May 7, 1939 to the late George and Catherine Bartel in Hayton, the 1957 valedictorian of St. Gregory’s High School was whisked away by Joe Mazna, a young buck with a full head of curly black hair, and together they created a warm, happy life-long home in Denmark. As full partners, Liz and Joe committed their lives to the century family farm, their faith community of Holy Trinity and raising their three children, Alan, Cheryl and Connie. Joe and Liz celebrated over sixty-one years of a loving marriage and provided a beautiful model of loyalty, compromise, humor, generosity, and faith.

Following high school, Liz pursued her dream to become a teacher and attended Manitowoc Teachers’ College. During her first year of studies, her mother became very ill and Liz returned home to care for her younger siblings. Despite the change in plans, she was a life-long learner, a voracious reader, and puzzle solver. She became a teacher in so many other ways, a love she passed to her daughters who have made education their careers. She provided weekly daycare for the Van grandkids and relished the role as early childhood educator. Along the way, Liz and Joe warmly opened their home to the FFA Alumni Exchange Dutch farmers who lived and learned Wisconsin agriculture. Liz was an amazing cook, baker, canner and knew how to throw a great party, something else she passed down to all three kids. She taught us the meaning of fun, caring, generous friendships with Paul and Ginny, Keith and Joyce, Roger and Annette, Wes and JoAnn and too many neighbors to count.

Our family celebrates with joy that our Dad was the first to welcome Mom to Heaven into his strong open arms. Joe preceded Liz in death in January 2021. Mom’s grit, spirit and wit will live on in their children Alan (Jackie), Cheryl (Paul) VandenLangenberg, and Connie (John) Bennett. The role of Grandma fit Liz perfectly. She adored every grandchild and delighted in their visits. Grandma’s holiday kids table was blessed by Kelan, Kelsey (Jack) Collins, Kendall (fiancée Josie Klarkowski), Amanda and Ben. Liz is further survived by her sisters, Dorothy Edwards, Aggie Brennan (Keith Powell), Janel Bartel, Lynn Ann (Jim) Greicar and family friend Gary Schultz. She was preceded in death by her parents, her dear in-laws whom she loved truly as a second set of parents, Adolph and Lillian Mazna, as well as siblings and in-laws Irvin Edwards, Mary Ann and Jim Leschke, Leo Bartel, and Shirley Bartel.

Liz was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity New Denmark parish serving in many roles: President of the Women’s Altar Society, floral arranger, linen and vestment launderer, brass polisher, wine orderer, choir organizer, and other tasks done outside of the spotlight. She had a strong faith in God and practiced her religion beyond church doors within her family and through her generosity to others. Her greatest joy was singing in the choir at Holy Trinity or whatever other parishes needed an extra voice to fill the rafters. Listen closely. The angels have a new, sweet voice joining them. Above all, Liz valued faith and family and that is where her life’s work was focused. Small, hard-working hands are now at peace. Rest in Love Mom, Grandma, Sister, Aunt, and Friend.
