Dr. Frank M. Weinhold III, age 83, of De Pere, passed away on Monday, June 19, 2023, at Angel’s Touch Assisted Living.
He was born on February 3, 1940, in Milwaukee, to the late Frank and Mildred (Russell) Weinhold. Frank attended schools in Wauwatosa and went on to graduate from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee with a bachelor’s degree in 1962. He furthered his education in medical school at the University of Wisconsin – Madison School of Medicine and Public Health, graduating in 1966. Frank enjoyed his time as a member of the Phi Chi Medical fraternity where he met Judy Schuler. Frank and Judy were married on June 11, 1966, at the First Congregational Church in Ripon, WI. He completed an internship at the Grand Rapids Medical Education and Research Center through Michigan State University in 1967 and completed his residency at the Indiana University School of Medicine in the Diagnostic Radiology department.
Frank served his country in the Air Force during the Vietnam War from 1970 – 1972 at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, SC. Following his service, he was hired to work at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay, where he played a part in bringing the first MRI machine to the area. He twice served as the Director of the Radiology Department at St. Vincent Hospital, and later helped run the radiology department at St. Mary’s Hospital. Frank was proud to be board certified in nuclear medicine, radiation therapy, radiology, and general diagnosis. Frank recently stated, "My favorite thing about my career was my ability to diagnose and use the science that I had learned to help care for others."
Frank was dedicated to his career, but still made time to do the things he loved. He enjoyed spending quality time with his family at the cottage at Shore Acres and loved working in his yard. He had a deep passion and love of being a member at Little Suamico Hunting & Fishing Club and for taking care of "The Duck Shack”. Another popular pastime of Frank’s was spending time on the Menominee River "Island Partnership" property in Wausaukee. He cherished his time out on the HobieCat sailboat, sailing all day long, happy to take whoever was on the beach along for a ride. Frank loved to play the piano, and always had an interesting limerick or joke to tell. He was inquisitive, always eager to learn something new and teach others what he knew. After 35 years of marriage, Judy passed away in 2001 after a long battle with cancer.
In 2002, Frank retired as a radiologist. He put in many long hours in a hard career, but at the end of the day, he knew what was most important, “The thing that makes me the luckiest and happiest man is that I have 3 wonderful children. Not everyone is that lucky.”
On December 10, 2004, he married Florence Garland at Resurrection Catholic Church. They shared 18 joyful years together. Frank and Florence enjoyed traveling, biking and golf - especially spending time with their families between Green Bay, Door County, Pawley’s Island, SC and Captiva Island, FL.
Frank is survived by his wife, Florence Weinhold; his children: Lisa (Jeff) Wallen, Jill (Brad) Hanna, and Mark (Shana) Weinhold; grandchildren: Joshua Wallen, Emily Hanna, Megan Hanna, and Brayden Hanna; brother: Russ Weinhold; step-children: Patrick Garland, Mary Garland (Hans) Schaupp, Tim (Ami) Garland; step-grandchildren: Christina Schaupp, Catherine Schaupp, Caroline Schaupp, Elizabeth Schaupp, Mikhail Garland and Ryan Garland; as well as other relatives and friends.
