Dr. Carsten David Anderson, Green Bay WI, passed away on Saturday, June 23, 2012. He was born on a farm on September 25, 1928, in Crookston, MN, to Martin O. and Selma (Hovland) Anderson. Growing up on their farm, he graduated from Fertile High School, Fertile, MN, in 1944. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was discharged in 1952. Carsten married Laurel Elaine McKoskey, from La Crosse in 1953, and began his family while working and attending the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota, St. Paul, MN, through the GI Bill, graduating in 1959. Carsten began a private veterinary practice in Blackduck, MN, and later moved it to Rochester, MN. While raising a family and practicing, he operated a family farm in Rochester and later in Green Bay, WI. He worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a Veterinarian in the meat safety and inspection program. During his college years, and then throughout his working career, Carsten served in both the National Guard and U.S. Army Reserves, retiring as a Colonel in the Veterinary Corps at age 60. During his service he received awards including Meritorious Service Medal, Distinguished Rifleman Badge, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, and United Nations Service Medal. He competed in many marksmanship competitions and received awards including Expert Badge with Rifle Bar, Sharpshooter Badge with Pistol Bar and Marksman Badge with Auto Rifle Bar. Carsten is survived by Laurel Anderson, Green Bay WI, mother of his children: Mark Carsten Anderson, St. Paul, MN; Jane Ruth (Christopher) Handler, Green Bay, WI; Dr. Steven Paul (Kerry) Anderson, Muskego, WI; and Joseph George (Kathy) Anderson, Denver, CO; and four grandchildren: Alexandra Wolf, Eau Claire, WI; Brooke Handler, Green Bay, WI; and Logan Anderson and Sofia Anderson, both of Muskego, WI. Also surviving are his brother, Paul (Bea) Anderson, Fertile, MN; and his sister, Joyce Tessman, McIntosh, MN; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his brother Merten Anderson, sisters Margrette Thornton and Irene Connors, brothers-in-law, John Thornton, Carl Tessman, and Larry Connors. Relatives and friends may call at Resurrection Catholic Church, 333 Hilltop Drive, Green Bay, WI, on Friday, June 29, 2012, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the church on Friday at 4:00 pm with Bishop Robert Morneau officiating. Burial with full military honors will be held on Saturday morning, June 30th. Cotter Funeral Home Cremation Services, De Pere, WI, is assisting the family with arrangements.
