Darwin A. Lieg, 91, Bellevue, passed away peacefully Wednesday, October 12, 2011, at his home. He was born April 7, 1919 in Bonduel, WI, son of the late Arthur and Frances (Dietrich) Larsen. His father died in January of 1925. His widow later married Shawano Merchant, Joseph Lieg, who adopted her children, Darwin and Kathryn. Darwin was a WWII Veteran who served 31 months with the United States Air Force in India. Upon returning to the United States, he married Frances Brunner on November 16, 1944 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano, WI. He retired from the Green Bay Correctional Institution in July of 1984. Darwin loved all nature and spent his retirement enjoying the woods and waterways of Wisconsin. He was a faithful, kind and gentle man who put his wife and children first in his life. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Father Claude Allouez Council. He is survived by his wife of almost 67 years, Frances; his daughter, Mary K. Suring and her companion, James Lee; her son, Adam Suring and wife Stephanie and their children, Andrew and Margaret, Germantown, WI; granddaughter, Erica (Lieg) Kotajarvi and her husband, Michael, and their daughter, Sarah, Bloomfield, MI. He is further survived by sisters-in-law, Anna Brunner, Carol Brunner, Magdalen Bartz, Margaret Adams, Mary Ann Stieber and her husband, Jerald; and brothers-in-law, Martin Brunner and Michael Brunner and his wife, Darla. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Franklin; his sons: Andrew, Edward and Joseph; his sister, Kathryn Tank; brothers-in-law, Clifford Tank, Anton, George and John Brunner, Robert Bartz, Robert Adams, Henry Jeske; and sister-in-law, Elizabeth (Brunner) Jeske. Family and friends may call Monday, October 17, 2011, from 9:00 a.m. until the hour of Mass at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 130 St. Matthew St., Allouez. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Monday at church, with the Rev. Philip Dinh-Van-Thiep officiating. Interment will be in Friendship Cemetery, Shawano Co.
