Daniel Stone, aka Baby Danny or Chef Dan, was born August 8, 1959 in Green Bay, WI. He attended Dickinson, Langlade, and St. Willebrord Elementary Schools, Edison Junior High School and Preble High School. Daniel graduated with a BA from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, where he was the student-chosen commencement speaker.
In 1981 he moved to New York City’s Sloane House (YMCA) where he was director of entertainment, and was honored with the designation of “Man of the Year.” The ceremony was his first black tie event, and he marveled at standing on the stage at Carnegie Hall to receive his award. He loved NYC, and he shared his joy of the city with many friends and family over the years.
Daniel received an MA from the New School for Social Research, and served as Registrar for Continuing Education at New York University. Eventually he made a major career change to focus on his true passion since childhood – food. He completed his culinary training at the Institute of Culinary Education (ICE) where he subsequently worked as a Recipe Editor and taught recreational cooking courses, while free-lancing (e.g., Saveur magazine, the History Channel, and the Food Network).
Danny was larger than life, extremely outgoing, enjoyed travel, and was universally loved by everyone who had the pleasure of encountering him. For those fortunate enough to have spent more than a single experience with him (such as the many students he taught in his renowned cooking classes), Danny was recognized by his extreme intelligence, sharp wit, and sassy attitude, yielding almost constant laughter in his presence. He was the quintessential organizer, party planner, and host, serving as the “glue” to bring family and friends together from far and wide. He loved his friends and family throughout the world, travel, theater, opera, ballet, and classic films. He made us all feel special, and he will be sorely missed.
Special thanks to the staff at Renaissance-De Pere for a year of outstanding care, Aurora St. Luke’s and Home Hospice for their comfort and guidance, and his many friends and “family” around the world (especially NYC and hometown Green Bay) for their unwavering support. Gratitude to Daniel’s friends who helped in so many ways to get him home to Green Bay, where he was able to see Mom and Dad weekly for the past year (even in the time of COVID19). Words cannot express our loving appreciation to Susan Garot who opened her heart, arms, and home to give Daniel the gift of being enveloped in the love of his family and friends in his last days. Thank you all!
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Green Bay Botanical Garden early next summer (date TBA). In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be directed to the Green Bay Botanical Garden (https://gbbg.org/). 2600 Larsen Road, Green Bay, WI 54303

It’s not really as hot as I thought it would be down here, and I knew a lot of people already!
