Ann F. Ley

January 2, 1935 — January 22, 2025

Greenleaf

Ann Frances Ley (Heimerl), passed away on January 22, 2025, after living a full, long life. Ann was born on January 2, 1935, to Antone and Erma (Hockers) Heimerl. On August 9, 1956, Ann married Donald Ley at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greenleaf.

Ann graduated from St. Mary’s Grade School in Greenleaf and De Pere High School. Ann was a natural caretaker. Her goals were to care for her husband Don, their eight children, eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Ann loved to sew, bake, and quilt; she learned many other crafts. At age 9, she was baking homemade pies from scratch. Ann had a big garden filled with vegetables to feed her family. Ann had the patience of a saint and could embrace the misunderstood.

Ann and Don spent their retirement at Lake Lucerne in Crandon. Ann mastered fishing and even cleaned her fish because she typically caught more than Dad. She wanted everyone to know she filleted her own fish. Mom would tell us stories of her blackberry picking with Dad which sometimes got interrupted by black bears. Ann and Don loved being so close to nature.

Ann was active in fundraisers for St. Joseph Church in Crandon and the Lion’s Club when living in Crandon. In addition, she would help at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greenleaf for the Polka Mass/Booyah Festival and Fall Bazaar.

Ann was proud of her upbringing. She was raised on the Heimerl Family Farm across the street from St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greenleaf. Ann gave her time to many years on the Funeral Committee. Ann would deep clean St. Mary’s School every summer when the kids were on break. Ann was close to all her siblings and their spouses. She cherished everyone.

Ann is survived by her children, Jean Geiger, Steve Ley(Sue), Barb Martin (Frank), Linda Vander Heiden (fiancé Loren Miller), Mary Sekeres (Tom), Rose Schaefer (Scott), and Don (Jenny). Ann’s grandchildren, Niki Martin (Joe Osmond), Frank Martin Jr (Cassie), Jacob Geiger (Nikki), Anna Gerdmann (Riley), Isaiah Ley (Mackenzie), Brittany Faber (Joel), Kayla Armstrong (Matt), Lillie Ley (special friend Eric Van Den Boogart), and many step-grandchildren. Ann leaves great-grandchildren, Eliana and Dillion Geiger, Theodore Martin, River Armstrong, Hadley Gerdmann, and many step-great-grandchildren. Ann is further survived by Don’s sister, Anne Hare, Ann’s sisters-in-law, Betty Heimerl, Phyllis Heimerl, Donna Heimerl (Jerry Heckel), and Pat Ley. Ann’s God Children, Dennis Heimerl, Bruce Pennings, Jean Jacobs Linsmeir, Judy Ley, and Mike Ley. Many nieces, nephews, and friends from De Pere, Crandon, and Greenleaf survive Ann. You were all important to Ann.

Ann was preceded in death by her husband Don, son Richard, her parents, Antone and Erma Heimerl, mother and father-in-law, Joe and Mary Ley, grandson Jonathan Geiger, siblings, Harvey, Earl, Gene, Hugh (Bonnie) Heimerl, and Jane Pennings (Marvin). In-laws, John Ley (Mable), Warren Hare, Pat Aschenbrenner (Harvey), Helen Flanagan (Jerome), and Joe Ley—many nieces and nephews, son-in-law Pete Vander Heiden and her God son, Joe Aschenbrenner. Ann is also preceded in death by her quilting friends, great neighbors, and lifelong friends from Greenleaf, Crandon, and De Pere.
