Walter "Wally" Van Ess

Walter R. “Wally” Van Ess, age 93, of De Pere, passed away and joined the love of his life, Dolores, on Sunday, November 24, 2013. He was born on November 19, 1920 to the late Louis and Clara (Simonar) Van Ess in Jacksonport. On May 15, 1943 he married Dolores Wirth at St. Joseph Church in Green Bay, and together they enjoyed 59 years of marriage. She preceded him in death on June 7, 2002. Wally retired in 1982, after more than 40 years of service with Northern Paper Mills, American Can Company and James River Corp. He enjoyed bowling, golf, fishing, gardening and taking care of his yard, playing cards and hunting. He loved spending time at the cottage. An avid Packer fan, Wally was in attendance at the Ice Bowl. Wally was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Ledgeview. Survivors include: his daughter, Jean Ostrenga; two grandchildren: Scott (Sue) Ostrenga and Tim (Lisa) Ostrenga; two great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Ashlynn Ostrenga, as well as many nieces, nephews and one godchild, Judy Lavis. In addition to his wife, Wally was preceded in death by his siblings: Harry (Margaret) Van Ess, Clarence (Evelyn) Van Ess, Art (Margaret) Van Ess, Lloyd (Ethel) Van Ess, Gladys (Al) Marto, Irene (Justin) Rolf and Joyce Laurent; son-in-law, James Ostrenga and mother and father-in-law, Rufus and Lil Wirth. Family and friends may visit at St. Mary Catholic Church-Ledgeview, on Wednesday, November 27, from 9:00am until the hour of Mass at 11:00am, with Rev. Richard Getchel officiating. Burial in Allouez Catholic Cemetery. Cotter Funeral Home is assisting the family. A special thanks to Joyce and Claudia for taking such great care of dad.
