Virgil J. Kolstad

Virgil J. Kolstad, 89, Allouez, passed away Monday, June 09, 2014 at her home. She was born on June 6, 1925 in Gardner to the late Walter and Alice (Maccoux) Vandenhouten. Virg attended the Four Corner School in Gardner for grades 1 thru 8 and then graduated from Brussels High School in 1942. She received her teaching degree from D.K. Normal School in 1944. Virg taught at Lowell School in Tonet and Pleasant Ridge School in Namur from 1944 to 1950. On June 11, 1946 she married Jirtle (Jack) Wayne Kolstad. She then went on to earn her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Teaching in 1966 from UW Oshkosh. She also earned her Masters in Remedial Rdg and Psychology in 1971. Virgil taught in Door County, Kewaunee County and Vilas County from 1946 thru 1951. Jirtle and Virg moved back to Green bay in 1965, teaching at Webster School and Kennedy School until her retirement in 1989. Virg was very involved in many activities in the community, G.B.E.A.-Retired Association; St. Vincent Auxilary; Past President and Trustee of Elk Lady and then joined Green Bay Lodge #259; Brown County Retired Women’s Club of De Pere; a caller for the Green Bay Christian Women’s Club; a mentor for the Commission on Aging; member of Resurrection Catholic Church. She was also a life member of Wisconsin Education Association Council. Virg loved crafts, especially crocheting afghans for her family and for Hospice. She also loved reading, dancing, traveling and visiting her nieces and nephews whom she was especially fond of and dearly loved, they helped her a great deal too. She is survived by her sister, Beulah Zellner; brother, Emery Vandenhouten; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Virgil “Ole” and Annabelle Kolstad; nieces, nephews and friends. Virg is preceded in death by her husband Jirtle, on December 15, 1995; sister-in-law, Jan Vandenhouten; nephews, Jimmy Vandenhouten; Douglas Robshaw; niece, Jeanne Schneske; sister-in-law, Donna Kolstad; brother-in-law, Archie Zellner. Family and friends may call Wednesday, June 11, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. until the hour of Mass at 11:00 a.m. at Resurrection Catholic Church, 333 Hilltop Drive, Allouez, with Bishop Robert Morneau officiating. Entombment will be in the Shrine of the Good Shepherd Mausoleum. Cotter Funeral Home is assisting the family. Online condolences may be expressed at www.cotterfuneralhome.com.
