Scott "Murf" Murray

November 25, 1955 — December 18, 2015

Scott “Murf” Murray, age 60, of New Franken, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on Friday, December 18, 2015. The son of Daniel and Barbara (Frechette) Murray was born on November 25, 1955 in Sheboygan, where he resided until age 10 before moving to Grafton. He attended Grafton High School, where he lettered in five sports: basketball, baseball, golf, cross country and track. Athletics were an integral part of Murf’s life; and after high school he entered and graduated from Milton College, where he was all-WICA and all-district in basketball. While at Milton College, Murf was invited to play in Costa Rica, and later went on to play there professionally for two years. He was later inducted into the Milton College athletic hall of fame. After college he continued playing basketball and softball recreationally, and after holding various other jobs, accepted the position of Area Manager of Fitness and Recreation for the Oneida Nation in 1995. Ten years ago, Murf started coaching basketball for the Oneida Nation, and was proud to be the coach of the team winning two gold medals at the high school level of the Indigenous Games. More than a coach, Murf was a mentor to the kids he had as players, both on and off the court. In addition to loving all things basketball, Murf loved golfing with his Thursday golf group of Kevin Kotarek, Larry Rand and Mike VanBoxtel. Survivors include his wife, Sherry; daughters: Valerie, Samantha, Holly and Bethany; grandchildren Kylie and Carter “Cat”; parents Daniel and Barbara; mother-in-law and father-in-law Michael and Charlotte Foy; sister Terese (Dan) DeCook as well as aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other family and many friends who will sincerely miss him. Murf was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Dan and Marie Murray and his maternal grandparents Miguel and Mary Ann Phoebe Elm. Family and friends may visit at Cotter Funeral Home, 860 N. Webster Avenue, De Pere, on Tuesday, December 22, from 3-7pm. Visitation will continue on Wednesday at Resurrection Catholic Church, 333 Hilltop Drive, Allouez, on Wednesday, from 9:00am until 10:45am. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am Wednesday with Bishop Robert Morneau officiating.
