Robert E. "Smitty" Smith

October 19, 1932 — December 26, 2020

Robert E. “Smitty” Smith, age 88, of Bellevue, passed away Saturday, December 26, 2020 at his home. He graduated from Central Catholic High School and on April 25, 1970, married Margot French. Smitty worked for Northwest Engineering and then Brown County for 34 years in addition to being a part-time caretaker of Lily Lake County Park. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, he was a member of the Bellevue VFW 9766. He enjoyed traveling, especially to Hawaii.
Smitty loved the outdoors and everyday he and Margot would walk. He walked rain or shine. Smitty was kind and generous with his time and his skills. What a handy guy. Any neighbor needing help whether it was to change a light bulb or repairing a porch, Smitty was there. Smitty was a proud marine and felt privileged to participate in the Honors Flight with his son Sam.
Smitty is survived by his children: Sam (Marge) Smith, Dan (Brenda) Smith, Deborah (Roe) Dibell, Susie (Tom) Renier, Ginger (Steve) Reinke, Steve Lemmen, Linda Lemmen and Wesley (Laura) Lemmen; grandchildren: Pam (Greg) Lori (Tom), Ryan, Lindy (Brent) , Craig , Brian, Jennifer (Andy), Tara (John), Eric (Debbie), Melanie (Curt), Josh, and Joe; great-grandchildren: Breanna, Nicole, Bryce, Landen, Lizzie and Abby; sister-in-law Marlene French and brothers-in-law: Dr. Ed Orman and Steve Rienow.
He was preceded in death by his wife Margot, a sister Sally (Bob) Houle and many sisters-in laws and brothers-in-law.
Private family services were held for immediate family. A public celebration of life will be held at a later date when it is safe to be together again.
