Paul Julius Schierl

Paul J. Schierl, 82, De Pere, born on March 28, 1935 in Menasha to the late Julius and Erna (Landig), passed away unexpectedly on Monday, October 23, 2017. Paul, who received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Notre Dame and his Juris Doctor from Notre Dame Law School, subsequently served in the United States Army from 1962 – 1963. Paul began his career with Fort Howard Paper Co. in 1964 and retired in 1990 as President, CEO, and Chairman of the Board. Paul was also very involved with his community and served on many boards including, Cornerstone Foundation of Northeastern Wisconsin, NEW Community Shelter, The Salvation Army Advisory Board, Notre Dame Law School Advisory Council, Green Bay Packers, Wisconsin Policy Research Institute, Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, Catholic Foundation, and Our Lady of Lourdes Parish. Of particular importance to Paul was his service as a Board member on a multitude of other Catholic educational institutions, including GRACE, Green Bay Area Catholic Education. Paul also served as campaign chair for the Green Bay Botanical Garden and The Salvation Army, and as a committee member for the Greater Green Bay Community Foundation, among others. On October 5, 1985, Paul married Carol Ann (nee O’Hara) in De Pere. In addition to Carol Ann, he is also survived by his five children: Michael (Valerie) Schierl, Kathryn Schierl, Susan Schierl (Sean) Sullivan, David (Esther) Schierl, Daniel (Tatyana) Schierl; two step-children: Meghan (Anurag) Khaitan, and Sean Twomey; nineteen grandchildren: Madeline Schierl, Zachary Schierl, Isabella Schierl, Sarah Schierl, Elizabeth Schierl, David Williams, Monique Williams (Roland) Flores, Clare Sullivan, Liam Sullivan, Denise Sullivan, Rosemary Sullivan, Abigail Schierl, Anna Schierl, Jonathan Schierl, Joshua Schierl, Jacob Schierl, Indira Khaitan, Haley Khaitan, and Jack Khaitan; and three great-grandchildren: Miguel, Aidan and Joseph Flores. Paul is also survived by his “Little Brother” from the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, Nick Hafeman; his beloved dog, Gus; and many other relatives and friends. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Julius and Erna, and his brother, John P. Schierl. Daily prayer was the cornerstone of Paul’s life. He had overwhelming desire to serve those in need with compassion and dignity. In addition to the Lord, Paul found refuge in the love of family and friends most especially his wife, children, step-children, and 22 grandchildren. He enjoyed puzzling, was an avid reader, especially enjoying history and the Civil War. Family and friends may visit at Cotter Funeral Home, 860 N. Webster Ave, De Pere, on Thursday, October 26, from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm. A parish prayer service will begin promptly at 7:00 pm, led by Rev. Dane Radecki, O. Praem. Visitation will continue on Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church, 4805 Sportsman Dr., Ledgeview, from 9:00 am until 10:00 am. The Mass of Christian Burial for Paul will be celebrated at 10:30 am. The Most Reverend Bishop David L. Ricken will officiate, with concelebrating priests Rev. Richard Getchel, Abbot Gary J. Neville, O. Praem and Rev. James Baraniak, O. Praem, who will also be the homilist. Interment will be at Allouez Catholic Cemetery. Online condolences may be expressed at www.cotterfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund in Paul’s name has been established at GRACE, Green Bay Area Catholic Education. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Sheri Prosser. It is impossible to put into words how significant she was to Paul and the entire family, both personally and professionally.
