Noreen E. (Gallagher) Woodward

May 31, 1933 — May 11, 2014

Noreen E. Woodward On May 11, 2014, surrounded by her children, Noreen E. Woodward, 80, of Allouez, passed on to eternal life at Angels Touch Assisted Living facility. Noreen was born on May 31, 1933, in Green Bay, the eldest child of John and Gretchen Gallagher. She attended Shawano High School, where she was an accomplished pianist and the 1950 Junior Prom Queen. She spent her summers on Shawano Lake and with her grandparents in De Pere. After overcoming polio during her senior year in high school, Noreen graduated with high honors. She proudly attended St. Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana, graduating in 1955. That’s where she met the love of her life, William S. Woodward, and they were married in 1956. Noreen was a lifelong care giver; whether caring for her children, as a registered nurse, nurse practitioner, or even to the Bitters Court gang or residents at Angels Touch. Noreen worked in the intensive care unit at St. Vincent Hospital and after obtaining her Master’s degree in nursing, practiced at the NEW Community Clinic and East Side Family Practice. She also taught nursing at NWTC and UW-Oshkosh. Noreen volunteered her time with the Service League, Green Bay Day Nursery, as a Girl Scout leader and on the Resurrection school board. Noreen had a love for history. She spent a great deal of time researching her ancestry and belonged to the De Pere Historical Society and Green Bay De Pere Antiquarian Society. A devote Catholic, Noreen and Bill were charter members of Resurrection parish. Most importantly, Noreen was most devoted to her family. Her husband preceded her in death by only eight months. Noreen is survived by her loving children, Mary (Mark) Freberg, Green Bay, Kathleen (Daniel) Biebel, DePere, William (Jeannie) Woodward, DePere, and Suzie (Matthew) Szuhaj, Oakland, CA.; and her grandchildren, Quinn Freberg, Jenna Freberg, Patrick Biebel, Gretchen Biebel, Allison Woodward, Will Woodward, Madeline Woodward, Sophia Woodward, Samantha Szuhaj, Jake Szuhaj, and Isabelle Szuhaj; one great grandchild, Jaycob Freberg; and her brother, John (Peggy) Gallagher and sister, Marjorie (Roger) Van Drisse, along with nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at Resurrection Parish, 333 Hilltop Drive, Allouez, between 4 and 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2014, with a Parish Prayer Service at 6:30 p.m., and visitation will continue from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Thursday. Funeral Mass to follow with Bishop Robert Morneau officiating. Cotter Funeral Home is assisting the family. Online condolences may be expressed at www.cotterfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, donations accepted to a memorial fund to benefit the NEW Community Clinic. Noreen’s children would like to thank all of her family and friends who spent time with her at Angels Touch, along with a sincere expression of gratitude to the staff of Angels Touch and Heartland Hospice. And, as Nan would say, “Never a dull moment!”.
