Merwyn “Mer” Orvis Sorensen, 90, formerly of De Pere, passed away Monday, August 19, 2013 at VA Hospital in Madison. He was born July 16, 1923 in Waupaca, WI, son of the late Sam and Dorothy (Pope) Sorensen. Mer graduated from Waupaca High School in 1941 and served his country in the United States Army Air Corp. He married Helen Rasmussen on October 5, 1944 in Scott Field, IL. Mer worked as Plant Manager for the City of De Pere Wastewater Treatment Plant. His life involvements include: Weyauwega Boy Scout Troop #21 Leader, Lifetime member of the De Pere American Legion, De Pere Men’s Club, Wisconsin Horseshoe Pitchers Association, and National Horseshoe Pitchers Association. He enjoyed playing cards, pitching horseshoes, fishing, hunting, bowling, golf, and trailer camping. Mer will be deeply missed by his wife, Helen; children: Sharon (Tim Kill) Phillips Kill, Jeffrey (Mardie) Sorensen, and Debra (Mark) Martin; grandchildren: Shelley (Scott) Gifford, Jaime Phillips, Samantha Sorensen, Scott Sorensen, Kelley Martin, and Katey Martin; great-grandchild, Sydney Gifford; and brother, Melford Sorensen. He was preceded in death by his parents. Family and friends may call Friday, August 23, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of funeral service at 1:00 p.m., at Christ Alone Church, 505 E. Allouez Ave., Green Bay, with the Rev. Dr. Ted L. Tromble officiating. Full military honors will follow the service. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, De Pere.
