Merritt John Walters was born in Wausau, WI on March 30, 1936 to Norman and Helen (Saettler) Walters. He died peacefully in Hope Hospice near Sanibel Island, FL on February 20, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. Merritt graduated from Newman High School in Wausau, attended college in Stevens Point and then studied at the University of Illinois and at UW Whitewater for post-grad work. Muscoda, WI is where he first taught history and social studies for 5 years, and was an assistant basketball coach. When his family moved to Green Bay in 1966, he taught social studies and economics at Green Bay West until he retired in 1996. Merritt was the yearbook advisor for many years and coached boy’s golf. He was also a “golf pro” at Peninsula State Park for serveral summers. Golfing was his wonderful hobby and joy, but even more than that he looked forward to winter months spent in Florida and summer days spent in Minocqua. Survivors include his wife, Judy (Garot) Walters; daughter Chris Copp and her son Connor Lemke; son Tom (Lily) Walters and their children, Kevin, Sarah, Michelle and Joshua; sister Mary Hartwig and her children Jennifer and Jason; sister-in-law Linda (Mark) Butchard and a brother-in-law Tom Garot. In addition to his parents, Merritt was preceded in death by his aunts and uncles, and a brother-in-law Jack Hartwig. Family and friends may visit at Cotter Funeral Home, 860 N. Webster Ave., on Monday, February 29, from 5-7p.m. with a parish prayer service to be held at 7p.m. Visitation will continue on Tuesday at Resurrection Catholic Parish, 333 Hilltop Drive, Allouez, from 9:30a.m. until 10:45a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00a.m. Tuesday with Bishop Robert Morneau officiating. Entombment in Allouez Chapel Mausoleum. Cotter Funeral Home is assisting the family. A memorial fund will be established at Cardiology Associates of Green Bay where Merritt received many years of excellent care.
