Mary Mathis, 72, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family after a battle with metastatic breast cancer on December 22, 2018. She was born August 15, 1946 to Veronica (Reedy) and Gilbert Mathis in Green Bay. She graduated from Denmark High School Class of ’64. From there she graduated from Manitowoc County Teachers College Class of 1966. She was then hired by Mr. R.O. Miller to teach grades 4-5-6 at Riverview School in Denmark. She went 7 years to night school and summer school to Silver Lake College graduating in 1973. She taught 42 years in Denmark. She retired in 2008. During her retirement she enjoyed volunteering 8 years in the Elementary Library, working for church funeral dinners, counting church money every other Monday, helping patients play bingo at Parkview Nursing Home, playing bingo at All Saints on Monday and her garden and yard flowers.
She is survived by her 3 sisters: Janice (Harold) Dobratz, Beverly Sohr, and Virginia Lemmens (the best care-giver ever); also nieces and nephews: Mark (Mary) Dobratz, Fred Dobratz, Daniel (Betty) Dobratz, Joe (Grace) Dobratz, Linda (Tom) Manier, Tom (Roxann) Sohr, Kevin (Kate) Lemmens, Vince (Kathy) Lemmens, Scott Lemmens (Godson), Kim Lemmens; grand-nephews and grand-nieces: Amanda (Tom) Kingston, Andrew Dobratz (Godson), Gale Hellpap (Andrew), Paul Dobratz, Derek (Angela) Dobratz, Eric (Hannah) Dobratz, Adam (Michelle) Dobratz, Melissa (fiancé Andrew Hansen)(Goddaughter), Logan Lemmens (Friend Taylor), Brody Lemmens (friend Meghan) (Godson), Nikki Lemmens, Kyle (fiancé Kristen) Lemmens, Adam (fiancé Nicole) Lemmens, Emily Lemmens, Dakota Manier (Godson), Erica Manier, Shannon and Connor Lemmens; great-grandnieces and great-grandnewphews: Calvin Kingston, Kylie Dobratz, Henry Dobratz, Mya Dobratz, Trinity Hellpap, Andrew Hellpap, Ayla Dobratz, Kenlee Lemmens; as well as cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother-in-law Wayne Sohr, aunts and uncles.
Family and friend may visit at Cotter Funeral Home-Denmark Chapel, 536 Cty Rd R, on Thursday, December 27, from 4-7pm with a parish prayer service at 6:30pm. Visitation will continue on Friday, at the funeral home, from 9:30-10:30am. Friends are then asked to meet at All Saints Catholic Church in Denmark for an 11:00am Mass of Christian Burial. Entombment in the Shrine of the Good Shepherd Mausoleum.
