Les (Lester) Skubal

July 2, 1923 — March 20, 2011

Les (Lester) J. Skubal, 87, Denmark, passed away Sunday, March 20, 2011 at a local hospital with his loving family at his side. He was born July 2, 1923 in Kewaunee Co., WI, son of the late Julius and Anna (Cisler) Skubal. He graduated from Kewaunee High School in 1941 and served his country during World War II as a Staff Sergeant with the U.S. Army 101st Infantry Training Battalion, stationed at Camp Joseph T. Robinson, Little Rock, Arkansas, where he was wounded four times during live-fire training exercises with the recruits. Les married Lenore Hruska October 7, 1950 at St. Lawrence Parish, Stangelville. They enjoyed 60 ½ years together. He ran the Denmark Cold Storage Plant for Atlas Cold Storage Co. for many years. Later on, he also worked at their Green Bay facility as Superintendent of Operations. At the end of each work day, the only place he wanted to go was home to his wife and family. He was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, where he ushered for many years and belonged to the Holy Name Society and Catholic Order of Foresters. He was also a member of the Denmark American Legion. Les enjoyed all of nature and the outdoors as a self-taught naturalist and was a guardian of God’s land and its natural inhabitants. He loved to read. He was a lifelong learner, being very knowledgeable and well-informed. In his retirement, he enjoyed playing cards at the Denmark Senior Center and bowling in the senior league. For those who knew Les well, we will not include his list of grievances. He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Lenore; five children: Deborah (Douglas Lichtfeld) Skubal, Wausaukee; Susan (Mike Sundquist) Skubal, Madison; Thomas (Debbie Lynn) Skubal, Kewaunee; Patricia (Daniel) Gray, Denmark; Mark (Maria) Skubal, New Franken; four grandchildren: Sarah Gray, Hancock, MI; Eric Gray, Ashland; Tristan and Paige Skubal, New Franken; and one brother, Vernon (Esther) Skubal, Kewaunee; as well as a number of nieces, nephews, an aunt, numerous cousins, and his pets Barni and Mikey. In addition to his parents, Les was preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law, Alan (Addie) Skubal; and a cousin, Norman Kleman. Family and friends may call Thursday, March 24, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church, Denmark. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. at church with Fr. Ron Colombo. Burial with full military rites will follow in All Saints Cemetery. Cotter Funeral Home, Denmark is assisting the family. The family extends a warm thank you to the caring doctors, nurses, and staff of the 2nd floor at Bellin Hospital for all their compassionate care.
