Leo V. Malone

October 17, 1935 — October 9, 2021

Leo Malone, 85, Green Bay, died Saturday after a brief illness surrounded by his seven loving children. Leo was born in Jersey City, NJ to James and Gertrude (McGovern) Malone. One of nine children, he grew up in Kearney, NJ, was a 1953 graduate from Our Lady Queen of Peace High School in North Arlington, and served in the U.S. Army in Korea. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

It was St. Patrick’s Day when he met Arlene Tyrrell and first asked her to dance. They married in 1962 at Our Lady of Victories Catholic Church in Jersey City. Leo’s career in the cheese industry brought them to Green Bay where together they raised a family of seven children.

Leo’s biggest joy in life was his family. He was happiest when sharing stories, laughs, adventures, sporting events and milestones with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He loved exploring, learning, and sharing. A collector of maps and books, he became a member of every museum he visited in his wide travels. He and Arlene treasured their trips back East to visit family.  A man strong in his faith, Leo trusted in the guidance Jesus blessed him with throughout his life. He was a member of Resurrection Catholic Parish since 1972.

Leo valued being involved in the community and helping people in need. He volunteered with the Red Cross and Curative Connections and was active in the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed being a fan of the Brewers and Packers. A founding member of the Shamrock Club of Green Bay, Leo’s Irish heritage was an important part of his identity, and he had great admiration for his immigrant grandparents.  Leo will be remembered for his dedication to family, endearing sense of humor, endless love of learning, and sharing of stories—especially those that were cheese related.

Leo was preceded in death by his beloved wife Arlene; his parents; his brothers James Malone, Bernard Malone, and Gerald Malone; his sister Sheila Malone; sisters-in-law Helen Malone, Betty Jane MacKenzie, and Dolores Schroepfer; brother-in-law John Tyrrell; his nephew Timothy Malone; and nieces Nancy Tyrrell and Elaine (Tyrrell) Plasteras.

Leo is survived by his children, Patricia (Al) Dolata, Janet (Dan) Conard, Leo (Lisa) Malone, Nancy (Mike) Williquette, Dan (Shelly) Malone, Sharon (Paul) Jensen, and Carol Jean (Scott) Harrig; his grandchildren, Anna (Dave), Laura (Drew), Riley, Sydney, Ella (Everett), Matt, Hailey, Olivia, Macy, Molly, Kellan, Hope, Nadia, and Sadie; seven great-grandchildren; his brothers Robert (Marilyn) Malone and Thomas (Kathy) Malone; his sisters Alice Malone, Cecilia (William) McGuire, sisters-in-law Nancy Malone , Kathryn Tyrrell, and Marie (Pat) O’Brien; and many treasured nieces, nephews, and friends.
