Kenneth Van Gompel

Kenneth M. VanGompel, 88, De Pere, was welcomed into the loving arms of his Heavenly Father, Tuesday, August 28, 2012, in De Pere. He was born November 19, 1923 in Little Chute, WI, son of the late John and Delia (Verbeten) VanGompel. Ken graduated from Nicolet High School, De Pere in 1942, and served his country in the United States Army from 1943-1946, where he was a member of the 555th Engineer Heavy Pontoon Battalion, serving in a support role in France and Germany during WWII. Ken married Dorothy Triebel, February 7, 1948 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Green Bay. He worked at Milprint in De Pere for 39 years as a Machine Operator and Millwright. He was a member of the De Pere Men’s Club, Knights of Columbus, and St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in De Pere, where he was an usher. Ken enjoyed golfing, playing cards, especially cribbage and sheepshead, and watching Packer and Brewer games. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy; three children: David (Connie) VanGompel, Solon, OH; Mary Lou Kramer, Bristol, CT; and Susan (Dan) Ascher, Sobieski; four grandchildren: Jeffrey (Tami) VanGompel, Jessica (Dan) Wellwood, Michael (Emily) W. VanGompel, and Jeanna Kramer; four great-grandchildren: Tyler and Brooklyn VanGompel, and Jack and Natalie Wellwood; one sister, Elaine Wrobel, Madison, WI; one sister-in-law, Marlene Triebel, Green Bay; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Jeanne; one son, James; six brothers and sisters: Florence Vandevoort, Joseph VanGompel, Ceil Vandenberg, Grace Weiland, Earl “Duke” VanGompel, and Joanne Newhouse. Family and friends may call Friday, August 31, 2012, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Cotter Funeral Home, 860 N. Webster Ave., De Pere, where there will be a Parish Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., conducted by Steve Donovan, Pastoral Minister. Visitation will continue on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the hour of Mass at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 220 S. Michigan St., De Pere. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Saturday at church, with Fr. Richard Getchel officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Online condolences may be expressed at www.cotterfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established. Ken’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the staff at the Renaissance Assisted Living Community and Rennes Health and Rehab Outpatient Therapy for the care and concern given to Ken.
