John (Jack) Mcmanus, Sr.

August 16, 1936 — August 9, 2021

John (Jack) Thomas McManus, of Green Bay, WI passed away on August 9th at Unity Hospice, after a long and valiant struggle with cancer.  He is survived by his four children: Catherine, John, Margaret and Michael, his nephew William, his grandchildren: Jennifer, Nicholas and Marcus, his sister Rita, and his longtime friend and partner, Barbara Jenkins.  He was predeceased by his parents, Patrick and Helen McManus, and his brother William.
John was smart, funny, and kind, with a quick wit and a big heart; he will be missed by family, friends, and all who knew him.John was born in Manhattan, New York, and graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School in 1954.  He worked his way through college as a bell hop for Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, carrying luggage and collecting tips from the likes of Elizabeth Taylor, Willie Mays, Jack Palance and Spencer Tracy.  John also joined the ROTC in 1957, eventually earning a promotion to Captain as a Reserve commissioned officer of the Army.  John was extremely proud of his service – and that he attended boot camp with Colin Powell (now retired 4-star general). John proudly graduated from The City College of NY with a Master of Business degree in 1968.  John married in 1961 and raised four children with Nancy, and later married Shirley.
John began his career working at Lord Baltimore Press in NY, found his niche in Purchasing while working for Lipton Corporation (NJ), and ultimately retired from Schreiber Foods in WI – where for over 20 years John had the opportunity to travel internationally, purchasing materials that saved his company millions, and for which he received many accolades.
John spent much of his time giving back to his community, working with nonprofits like Literacy Green Bay and the Salvation Army.  He was especially fond of being a math and reading coach for elementary school kids whom he mentored weekly and created lasting bonds of friendship.  John was also an avid golfer, whose time on the course was more focused on comradery and fellowship, rather than who had the best score….. although he did like to win.
