Jim Norder

December 31, 1969 — December 1, 2017

Jim Norder, 69, Cloverleaf Lakes and formerly De Pere, passed away Friday, December 1 at home with his wife and sons by his side. He was born July 11, 1948 in New London to Robert and Mary (Garrity) Norder. Jim attended school in Bear Creek, Wisconsin where he was a standout athlete, especially on the pitching mound, and Prom King at Bear Creek High School. It was in Bear Creek that he met the one and only love of his life, Sally Schertz. Jim and Sally dated throughout high school and were married while he was enrolled in the barber program at Northeast Wisconsin Technical Institute. On October 28, 2017, Jim and Sally celebrated 50 years of wedded bliss with immediate family at his favorite place on earth, their home on Cloverleaf Lakes. Following graduation from NWTI, Jim, Sally and newborn son relocated to De Pere to embark on a 40+ year career in which he cut the hair of generations of men in De Pere. His work ethic, skills with a clippers and quick wit helped him build a business to be proud of. Over his time at Centurion Barbershop, he never took a sick day and only near the end of his career, began taking two days off each spring to get a jump on the golf season and play a few rounds with his sons in Kentucky and Tennessee. He was always ready with a quick wit or a sharp one-liner when he met his countless customers and he cherished all of them. In addition to his love for family and work, Jim had a great passion for sports and was a huge fan of his adopted hometown De Pere Redbirds, the Badgers, Brewers and Packers. After retirement he was thrilled to attend three straight Rose Bowls to watch his beloved Badgers. Although far from Rose Bowl-caliber, he cherished his time in gyms and at parks and fields throughout the area watching his sons and grandchildren compete. He would always provide a blunt, “constructive” critique of their play, but there was much loved shared and his spot in the stands will be missed. He loved (and hated!) playing golf and was a member of Riverside Golf Course where he played nearly every day with his retired group of buddies and looked forward to “friendly” competitions with his sons and cousins. In recent years, he enjoyed playing with Sally in the couple’s league at Riverside. If he wasn’t on the golf course in the summer, he was on the pontoon sharing a ride with Sally, kids, grandkids and granddogs. Although he worked incredibly hard, he enjoyed life to the fullest, loved his family and lived with great humility. He was respected and loved by family and his large circle of friends and will be missed by all. Jim is survived by his wife, Sally, who provided day-and-night care throughout his life, but especially as he battled hemochromatosis and its complications in recent years. He is also survived by his son, Mike (Cheryl) and their children, MacKenzie, Taylor and Tanner, as well as his son, Brian (Jill) and their children, Camden and Grace. He is also survived by his siblings, Bob (Ali) Norder, Karen (Leo) Conrad and Pat (Robin Conlon) Norder, as well as in-laws Don (Kathy) Pfalz, Judy Schertz, Joan (Tom) Lehman, Gerri Schertz, Jan (Jerry) Vollmer and Jeff (Tammy Gies) Schertz. He was welcomed into heaven by his parents, Robert and Mary Norder, his sister Peggy Norder, father-in-law Don Schertz, mother-in-law Phyllis Schertz, brother-in-law Dave Dennison, brother-in-law Dick Schertz, nephew/Godson Matt Dennison and nephew Bradley Schertz. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Jim’s great life at Cotter Funeral Home, 860 North Webster in De Pere, on Monday, December 4 from 3:30 p.m.-7:00 p.m Bishop Robert Morneau will lead a prayer service at 7:00pm. Visitation will continue Tuesday, December 5 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 301 W. Tielky Street in Bear Creek, from 9:00 a.m.-10:45 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Online condolences may be expressed at www.cotterfuneralhome.com.
