James Richard Mattson

April 15, 1941 — September 16, 2014

James Richard Mattson, MD, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 16, 2014, at his home in Allouez, WI. Jim had Parkinson's disease for many years but it did not define him. Born to the late Gladys and Cyrus Mattson in Stillwater, MN. Jim grew up in Moose Lake, MN where he was known as Jimmy. Jimmy prepped his classmates every morning before school for college. He excelled academically and was a great basketball, baseball, trumpet (marching band) and piano player. He attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth for three years and medical school at Northwestern University where he met Heidi from Hannover, Germany. A few months later they were married in Moose Lake. She did not understand one word that was said that day. Life took Jim and Heidi to Washington D.C. and back to Chicago where their son, Thomas was born. Jim proudly served his country as a major in the US Army medical corp. Jim was a resident at UCLA Hospital and their daughter, Nancy was born. Then back to Northwestern University Hospital where Dr. Stewart Milson called looking for a physician to open an Asthma and Allergy practice in Green Bay. While in private practice in Green Bay Dr. Mattson would see patients at Bellin Memorial Hospital, St Mary Hospital Medical Center, St Vincent Hospital, Iron Mountain, Marinette and Manitowoc. Dr. Mattson was president of the Wisconsin State Medical Society in 1985. In 1998 Dr. Mattson's son, Andrew tragically passed away. His patients were a great support to him during that difficult time. When Dr. Mattson retired from BayCare his asthma patients were his greatest concern. Jim's love of Piano was shared at many Christmas neighborhood gathering (Katie Dave Carruthers, Tom Patty Geocarius, Bonnie Cal Granuis, Curt Judy Harper, Ann Rolf Lulloff, Nina Roger Wargin, Barbara Ed Vogel, Carol Bob Schmidt, Diane Bert Liebmann, Don Pat Menefee). The memories of Park De Langlande are long and great for Jim. Jim was an accomplished golfer. He had 2 hole in ones. He was also a great singer in the choir at Ascension Lutheran for years. He loved the Great Books especially War Peace. Fundraising for the opera with Maestro Pansky was a passion for Jim Heidi. They shared their love for the Opera with their friends and the community of Green Bay. If you needed someone to write a recommendation letter or make a call on your behalf Jim was ready to help. He fought for what he believed to be right. Jim was very proud to have the VA clinic in his building for 10 years and would like to say thank you to Congressman Mark Greene to all the veterans. Special thanks to Doc Sach for all his encouragement Jim's step father, Floyd Clark for making him the man he became. Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life.
