Evelyn Scanlan

December 31, 1969 — October 20, 2012

Evelyn (Evie) Alice (Hayden) Scanlan, 97, De Pere, died at Bornemann Nursing Home in Green Bay WI on October 20, 2012, surrounded by her family and all 6 of her great grandchildren. Evie was born in Green Bay on May 19, 1915, to Harvey and Elsie (Ledger) Hayden. She graduated from Green Bay West High School in 1933. Evie married Norbert J. Scanlan on August 29, 1935 and together they raised 3 children. She was a dedicated wife and mother, who, after Norbert’s death in 1983 ran their business, Scanlan Jewelers, until 1985. Evie loved sports, especially the Packers, and baseball. She was an avid bowler and traveled around the US attending tournaments with her fellow bowlers. Evie was a great cook and baker. She pored over magazines for new recipes to try out on the family. Everyone loved her lemon meringue pie. She said it was the “pucker” that made it the best in De Pere. She loved baking cookies for her great grandchildren, and would light up when they visited. She enjoyed watching them eat the cookies and play with her collection of stuffed animals. Evie loved playing cards with friends and family. She played Cribbage up to the last 6 months of her life. She especially liked playing with her grandsons, frequently beating them, which prompted them to kiddingly accuse her of cheating. She would say “uh uh”, then turn to someone else and wink. One of her grand passions was going to the Casino, which she did well into her 90’s whenever her friends and family would take her. In 2006 Evie moved in with her son, John, and daughter-in-law, Mary Lou. She lived with them for 3½ years before moving in with her daughter, Colleen. When a nursing home became a necessity, Colleen was by her side, day in and day out. Evie is will be missed by her two daughters, Patricia Mashl, Whittier NC, and Colleen Scanlan, Green Bay, and one son and daughter-in-law, John and Mary Lou Scanlan, De Pere. She is also survived by 3 grandsons, Jay (Anne) Mashl, Alton ILL, Jeff (Colleen) Scanlan, Sun Prairie, and Phil (Tracy) Scanlan, De Pere. She is further survived by 6 great grandchildren, Jillean, Kiera, Madeline, Olivia, McKenna, and Liam. Evie is also survived by one sister-in-law, Marcella (Austin) Hayden, Iowa, and nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. In addition to her parents and her husband, Evie is preceded in death by her brothers, sisters and spouses: Donald (Vi) Hayden, Dorothy (Gordon) Kunstman, Elmer Hayden, Eleanor (Carl) Smits, Marion (Benny) Piontek, Austin Hayden, Lloyd (Gretchen) Hayden, and Frank (Beulah) Hayden. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, October 27, at New Hope United Methodist Church, 1900 Dickenson Road, De Pere, (the old Swan Club). Family and friends may call from 2:00 p.m. until the time of the service at 4:00 p.m. Pastor Mike Herdt will be officiating. A memorial fund is being established in lieu of flowers.
