Emma Fogltanz, 96, of Denmark, passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at a local nursing home. She was born June 7, 1914 in Denmark, daughter of the late Wencel and Barbara Schleis. She married Roman “Romy” Fogltanz in May 1934. He preceded her in death in 1999. Emma and Romy farmed in the Denmark area for 24 years before moving into the village. She was known in the community as a fine baker, making the best Bohemian rye bread and kolatches. Emma was very proud of her Bohemian Heritage. All four of her grandparents had migrated to the U.S. from Bohemia in the 1850s and “homesteaded” in Wisconsin shortly after it became a State. She was a longtime member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in New Denmark. Emma and Romy helped to update and preserve the Church. Emma is survived by two daughters: Joan (Ludwig) Rudel of Bethesda, Maryland: and Marlene (Richard) Herbst of Tucson, Arizona; five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister. Friends may call Saturday, April 2, from 9:00 a.m. until the hour of Mass at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, New Denmark. The church is located at 6395 County Road NN, south of route 96, west of the village of Denmark. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the church with Fr. Ron Colombo officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Knutson-Cotter Funeral Home, Denmark, is assisting the family. Online condolences may be expressed at www.cotterfuneralhome.com.
