Edward James Smits, 78, of De Pere, passed away Monday, May 17, 2021 at his home. Born in Green Bay to Peter and Hattie (Vanden Elzen) Smits on October 2, 1942, Ed was the youngest of eight children. On February 28, 2004, Ed married Lynn Alberts and shared 17 years of marriage before her passing.
Ed spent 30 years of dedicated service to Carver, delivering yachts and enjoying the open road. Karaoke without the ability to carry a tune, tuning in to the Packers, golfing, and spending time with his children were the things Ed enjoyed most. He was a man of integrity and wit who adored his Fig Newtons.
Survivors include his children: Dan Smits, Dale (Lori) Smits, Debbie (fiancé Tom Elliott) Smits; his step-children: Jamie (Paul) Hoddel and Kenny Albert; grandchildren: Troy (Tavia) Smits, Missy (fiancé Bob Craw) Smits, Jessica (fiancé Maryann Browning) Smits, Taryn (Scott) Lajeunesse, and Owen Smits; great-grandchildren: Madi, Chrisy, and Miles; brothers: Merlin (Junella) and Roger (Rita) Smits; sisters: Florence Heim, Rosemary (Lyle) Mangin, and Laverne Heezen; sister-in-law Genevieve Smits, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Ed was predeceased by his parents; wife, Lynn; brothers, Harold and Roland; and in-laws, Ervin Heim and Henry Heezen.
Family and friends may visit at Cotter Funeral Home 860 N. Webster Avenue De Pere, on Friday, May 21, from 3pm until 6pm. The funeral service will follow at 6pm, Fr. Mike Ingold officiating. Ed’s final resting place will be Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
