Dwight Wesley Hansen

July 20, 1949 — November 26, 2022

Dwight Wesley Hansen, 73, of Bellevue, Wisconsin, was welcomed by the Lord to his heavenly home, on Saturday, November 26, 2022, after a brave battle with leukemia. Dwight was born to John and Janet (Malsbury) Hansen on July 20, 1949, in Superior, NE, the third of five children, and raised on his family’s farm. He graduated from Superior High School and attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. During his freshman year, he met the love of his life, Janet Jo (Harris) Hansen. Dwight and Janet married on April 12, 1971 at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Lincoln, NE.

Dwight earned his Bachelor of Science in Education-Business in 1972, taught Mathematics for 7th-12th grade for a year in Brainard, NE, and earned his Master of Arts in Accounting in 1976, at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Dwight taught Accounting at Iowa State University for two years, and also earned his CPA and CMA during this time. He then joined the faculty at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, IA in 1978. Dwight retired from Coe as an Associate Professor of Stead Department of Business Administration and Economics, Emeritus in 2015.

In December of 1977, Dwight and Jan were blessed with the arrival of their son, James Wesley Hansen, of whom Dwight was very proud. Dwight’s Christian faith and his family were always foremost in his life. His love shined brightly to all who knew him, and friends, family, and students alike gravitated to him. He treated his students like family, taking them under his wing, especially those whose families were far away from Cedar Rapids. They built bonds that last to this day.

After retiring in 2015, Dwight and Jan moved to Green Bay, WI, to be close to their son and daughter-in-law, Erica (Jensen) Hansen, and grandson, Joseph. Dwight relished getting to teach Joseph during the Covid-19 pandemic, and taught him so much that Joseph was moved to the next grade for mathematics. Dwight had an exuberance for spending time with his grandson, was up for any activity, and was always looking for fun things they could do together.

Dwight is survived by his wife of 51 years, Janet (Harris) Hansen; his son, James Wesley Hansen and daughter-in-law Erica (Jensen) Hansen; his grandson, Joseph Wesley Hansen; his sisters Sharon (Hansen) Schmidt (Bob), Debbie (Hansen) Young, and Wanda Hansen; and by many beloved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Wesley Hansen and Janet (Malsbury) Hansen; and by his brother, Donn Hansen.

A special thank you to the doctors, nurses, and medical staff of both of Dwight’s hospitals, Aurora BayCare and Froedtert, as well Pastor Errer, Cotter Funeral Home (Rachel), and our loving neighbors, family, and friends.
