Dr. David Phd Jowett

October 14, 1934 — April 15, 2018

Dr. David Jowett, age 83, died at home on April 15th 2018. David was born in Liverpool, England, on October 14th 1934 to Joseph and Hilda (Johnson) Jowett. His formative years were spent in Liverpool during World War II and would impact him for the rest of his life. After high school David continued his formal education at the University of Wales, where he earned a PhD in Botany and met his future wife, Patricia Owen. On June 26th 1957, he and Patricia were married in a double ceremony alongside his sister Valerie and her husband Bill. David spent his early career years in Uganda, East Africa putting his Botany degree to use as a plant breeder. Sandwiched between two three-year stints with the Colonial Service in Uganda, he was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship with the Rockefeller Foundation at Iowa State University. This eventually led him, in 1965, to immigrate with his family to the US, where he spent five years teaching and continuing his own education at Iowa State. In 1970 he joined the faculty at UWGB where he established a program in statistics and helped develop the computer center and graduate programs. He was named acting vice chancellor for academic affairs in 1984. However his greatest love was teaching and helping his students further their own academic endeavors. He was an energetic and dedicated teacher, who felt that one of the greatest pleasures we all enjoy is the dawning of consciousness. It is the ‘a-ha reaction’ when everything falls into place, and, as a teacher, that was something he could see and experience every day with his students. Upon retirement, Dave and Pat rediscovered their passion for travel and adventure. They spent several years enjoying visits to countries throughout Europe, as well as North America, Australia, and New Zealand. David was an avid runner and biking enthusiast, who enjoyed participating in many events including the Bellin Run, and Door County Century. He was a voracious reader of History and never ceased learning.

David is survived by his loving wife Patricia, his daughters Marion (Lee) Shambeau and Karen Jowett; his grandchildren Gareth (Jenna) Shambeau, Simon Shambeau, and Victoria (Nick) Johansen, and his great grandchildren Morgan and Sawyer. He is also survived by one brother, Edward Jowett, nephew, Robert Jowett and niece, Nicola Cane.

David is preceded in death by his parents, his sister and brother in-law Valerie (Bill) Bell, and his sister in-laws Diana Jowett, and Sheila Owen.
