Dan C. Mitchell

May 11, 1948 — January 13, 2020

Dan Charles Mitchell, of Green Bay, transitioned peacefully on January 13, 2020 at age 71 after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in November. Shortly after receiving the diagnosis and poor prognosis, Dan told us, “I have had a wonderful life with great family and friends. I have no regrets and am not afraid to die.”

Dan embraced all the adventurous and enjoyable aspects of life including traveling to see his kids, playing with his dog “Charlie,” acting in a local community theater, crewing on a lightning-class sailboat at Windjammers, making his wife laugh, teaching, attending trapeze school, cheering for the Pack, fishing with his brothers and family, returning to school and graduating with a second Bachelor’s degree, becoming certified then serving as a Master Gardener, and volunteering with his amazing team at the Ice Age Trail Alliance - Lakeshore Chapter. His memory and energy live on through his loved ones.

He is survived by his best friend and wife, Gini Mitchell, children Jonathan Mitchell and Abby Ouji, Abby’s wife Margarette, Golden-Doodle Charlie, his three brothers: Peter (Michelle), Bill (Pam), Mike (Carol), his brother-in-law Jim (Dorothy) Walls, sister-in-law Nancy (Paul), and all of his fabulous nieces and nephews.

Dan was born in Peoria, IL to Leah and Charles “Bud” Mitchell and attended Woodruff High School then the University of Illinois, as a member of Lamda Chi Alpha. Dan met his wife of 45 years, Gini Walls, on stage in the play Petrified Forest at Cornstock Community Theater in Peoria, IL. Dan worked at McKesson and Thrivent Financial and volunteered at the Literacy Council and as a Master Gardner at the UWGB-Extension help desk.

Anyone who was fortunate enough to meet Dan was indelibly left feeling his curiosity, energy, humor, silliness, interest in nature, gregariousness, and passion for knowledge and learning. His family is planning a celebration of life in the spring. Dan and his family are grateful for the staff at Unity Hospice who supported Dan and his family through the most difficult aspects of Dan’s passing and allowed him to transition comfortably.
