Catherine "Kay" Wheelock

October 22, 1916 — July 1, 2014

Catherine Mary (Kay) Wheelock died July 1, 2014 in the Clark County Health Care Center in Owen, Wisconsin where she had been a resident since 2009. Kay, the daughter of Anton and Caroline Vedra, nee Peeters, was born in Wausaukee, Wisconsin October 22, 1916, in the Frank Peeters farmhouse. She was the 2nd eldest of a family of 10 children. The growing Vedra family moved into a home on Beech Street in 1918, where Kay resided until her graduation from Wausaukee High School in 1934. She then moved to the Green Bay area where she spent most of her adult years. After attending business school in Green Bay, Kay was employed as a secretary for Jim Gallagher Films. In later years, she worked for the IRS and as a legal stenographer. She completed her working career at Moore Business Forms from which she retired as Human Resources Director. For nearly a half century, Kay epitomized the successful career woman. The staccato sound of her approaching high heels signaled the official start of many a corporate or family gathering. She loved her roles as wife, daughter, sister, family advisor, confidante, Aunt, loyal friend and Godmother. Every family get-together became a celebration when we received her penny post-card saying that she would be in attendance. Kay married Gerald R Wheelock January 19, 1946. They loved traveling together, especially driving through the Michigan Upper Peninsula and along the Lake Superior shoreline in the Marquette area. No doubt remembering the Great Depression, Kay always packed lunches- for- two in a picnic basket. Jerry died April 23, 1989. Kay is survived by her sister, Mary (Max) Falat, Simi Valley, CA, brothers, George (Rose) Vedra, Rockton, IL Gerald (Carol) Vedra, Princeton, MN, sister-in-law Connie (Paul David) Vedra, Stillwater, MN, many loving nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, sisters: Frances and Norman Kunick, Elaine and Ray Wouters, Virginia and Robert Minix, brothers: Charles and Marge Vedra, Paul David Vedra, Anthony Vedra, brother-in-law Max Falat, and her beloved Boston terrier, Penny. A Gathering at 10 AM at St. Francis Catholic Church, 220 South Michigan , De Pere, Wisconsin will precede the 11 AM Memorial Mass of Christian Burial, July 12, 2014. Inurnment will follow in Nicolet Memorial Gardens, 2770 Bay Settlement Rd., Green Bay, WI.
